I’ve assembled many a flat pack in my time as The Flatpack Professor. Time and time again, I’ve heard complaints and horror stories of assembly jobs gone wrong. It turns out, most folks just don’t enjoy building flat packs (sorry, I can’t relate!).

Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure a better chance of success. If you’re looking for a method to the madness, read on for some essential assembly tips.

Designate a Work Area — Clear an area to create a work space for flat pack assembly. You don’t want anything getting in your way, and becoming unintentionally screwed on to your new furniture.

Lock Away Little Ones — Whether it’s pets or kiddos, we can guarantee assembly will go smoother if the little rascals don’t have eyes on what you’re doing.

Prep Yourself — Make sure you’re full of everything you need to get through this process: snacks, coffee, maybe an IPA. Let’s stay calm and peaceful.

Take Count — The instruction booklet lists what is included in the box. Before you begin, it’s crucial to count your pieces (including screws and nails) to make sure you have everything you need. This can prevent a major pulling-your-hair-out down the line.

Read Ahead — Flip through the instruction booklet, beginning to end, to get an eye for what the whole process will look like. It’s boring reading, but I promise it’s worth it.

Slow and Steady — Begin assembly with care, fixing any mistakes as you go along. Don’t save all your errors for the end, as a future-you problem. Future-you will be very upset.

Play by the Rules — Treat the instruction booklet as your new bible. Don’t veer off the instructions, and don’t jump ahead through the steps. The last thing you want is to have to backtrack and disassemble because you built it improperly.

Panic-Free Zone — If you have a breakage in one or two pieces, don’t fear. Many flat pack furniture companies will send out replacements. It happens to the best of us.
